Invite the Indoors Out!

The best part about summer is expanding your living areas to the outside. You may be asking yourself, "well how do I that?" Well we asked that same question to our talented designer Karen Pierce and she laid it all out.

Here's Karen's 3 tips to make your outdoor space as inviting as your indoor ones:

1.) Decide what purpose you need the area to fulfill

The first question to ask:  what is the purpose of the space? Any family space in your home needs to be sectioned into zones: eating, playing, relaxing…

Eating: How many people will be there on any given day?  Do you have the ability to add extra seating for larger groups?

Playing: Is your family into card/board games?  If so, you will need flat surfaces to accommodate these activities.  Are your kids young and need space for outdoor toys?  Then storage may be a priority for you.

Relaxing: How many people will be relaxing together?  Sofa? Sectional? Chairs?  Dress it like your indoor space… you will need tables for food and drinks.

For example:

A reading nook needs a comfy seat and a side table.  Throw in an ottoman and small area rug and it is dressed to de-stress!

2.) Dress the area according to your needs

Seating – Do you like to host parties? Make sure your seating covers everyone in your home as well as your guest list.

Tables – Pick their purpose!  Small enough for a glass of sweet tea?  Large enough for a 1000-piece puzzle?  Comfy to prop your feet on?

Rugs – A great way to bring color and pattern outdoors!

Accessories – The unsung hero of any space… the right accessories can help tie the inside and outside living spaces together.

Lights – Light up the night with decorative accent lights.  Even mosquito repelling citronella candles help create a relaxing atmosphere.

3.) Carry your design style outdoors for visual continuity
